Most people get their data online nowadays, but I still like to drive down to the data centre on Saturday and go round with a trolley to stock up for the week, picking out the freshest-looking data, seeing what's on offer, having a chat at the checkout, dodging the Russian scammers in the car park

Why Visual Journalism is so slow? I've tracked every hour I worked on an article for two weeks last year. Most of my time did not go into graphics production but in researching and analyzing data. The detailed breakdown and some ideas how to speed up the process:

Despite the cute map, worth noting the most common incident reported at matches last season was hate crime. Hate crime was reported at 420 matches (just six of these were women's football). A lot more work is needed so everyone can feel safe at matches, according to

I have this upcoming Friday and Monday off. Yes the Easter bank holidays. Yes in a job in journalism. Sorry but my team are likely bored of hearing me talk about how mind blowing it is to get bank holidays off in a journalism job. First job I've had in my adult life to get bank holidays off🤯

i talk about this with data all the time: if you don’t understand the data fully, you’re likely to find things that you don’t understand. talking to experts can clear these kinds of things up. but you should do that *before* you publicize what you found.

Especially among people working on news-adjacent AI stuff, it's really common to find the "fundamental category error" of "thinking journalism is about synthesising existing texts". I've thought about this quote regularly over for the past year as I keep running into examples of this.

LinkedIn is weird. People begging for their “expertise” to be acknowledged with no evidence it exists. Particularly funny when they’ve asked you for advice on becoming a “media leader” (boak btw). I dunno mate, have some actual expertise? 🤷🏻♀️
