FWIW there have already been alternatives / cousins for years, paid options from competing Morisawa (CinemaLetter) and Dynacomware (DFCinemaRin), one from defunct K.K. Kinema Font Lab (Cinema Calligraphy, top of quoted thread), and a completely commercially free option Cinecaption at the very least

So I found out about fontworks a couple years back when I made a Pokemon parody shitpost and jfc they are prolific DMC & Konami in general, Nintendo, several upon several JRPGs The font I use for subbing, Fredoka, is a freeware knock off of Zadoka (fontworks)

Since the full url isn't coming through these devs are facing a 50x price hike, from ~400 USD per year to somewhere in the range of 20,500 per year. And that's with a 25,000 user cap. It's *bonkers*

One of the reasons I've never bought into AI doomerism, is that to believe "it's here to stay, get used to it!" you have to buy into the idea that AI generated elements are so hardcoded or integral as to be permanent, when they really aren't. You can simply remove it, and it's gone just like that.
