My sense of things (curious if @stevevladeck.bsky.social agrees) is that the dramatic rise in cert before judgement is the result of two interrelated factors: 1. The dramatic increase in executive actions of sweeping import that stretch the law 2. The dramatic decline of Congress doing anything.

Certiorari "before judgment" is how #SCOTUS takes up a full appeal *before* the intermediate federal courts have heard it. It used to be exceedingly rare. For instance, there wasn't a *single* grant of such expedited review b/w August 2004 & February 2019. This is the *23rd* such grant since then.

I have tried getting a copy of my marriage certificate and divorce papers from a previous marriage from over 30 years ago. My ex was in the military and we were married and divorced in 2 different states. I keep being told by both states they could not find paperwork from either.

Tried to get my real ID. I had my license, my SS card and my birth certificate. I was not allowed to get my real ID because my birth name is different than my married name. Now I have to go dig up a marriage certificate. You know who wouldn’t have to do this? A man. Never change your last name.

I was married by a judge who gave up the last name I have (no relation) when she got married. She told me not to give up mine (I used to joke with her sister that I was related, bc their Black father was far cooler than me).
