This is a good example of why making a drug OTC does not necessarily increase access or use, unless it goes hand-in-hand w/ affordability. OTC drugs often aren't covered by insurance. ~$45 dollars for a 2-pack can be out of reach for many, a choice b/t buying it or food

Oh boy. ACIP started today’s meeting by reopening yesterday’s second vote. The measure has now passed, meaning Medicaid and federally qualified health centers can’t provide coverage for MMRV vaccines for kids under 4. American Indian infants and toddlers have also lost coverage.

As RFKJ‘s ACIP meets again today, know that Covid vaccines protect children from severe disease and death. Without vaccines, kids face devastating risks. For example, “between August 2021 and July 2022, Covid-19 killed 821 children ages 0–19, making it the leading cause of death in this age group.”

NO TRUST IN ACIP! Well, the absolutely incomprehensible vote at the end of the ACIP meeting has left everyone confused. MMRV resolution passed, so it’s off the schedule for younger children and CMS won’t cover it.

But this also assumes access to the vaccines. It’s incredibly difficult to find a pharmacy or a pediatrician office that stocks pediatric Covid doses for kids 5-11 (and I assume even worse for 6 months-4) outside of major cities. Willing pediatricians alone can’t solve this.

Pretty worrisome that many of these ACIP members don't seem to understand the basics of how vaccines get paid for in the US, nor the consequences of their votes.

IT'S OFFICIAL: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York State, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and New York City have formed the Northeast Public Health Collaborative. The collaborative will issue their own vaccine recommendations and coordinate public health efforts.
