I recently had a manuscript rejected with 30 pages of feedback. I have taken time to orient to the feedback to consider points raised with the hopes of taking what’s helpful to improve it for a new submission. The more I sift through the reviews, the more I wonder whether some were AI generated. 1/3

“Affect” in bees. I read this paper, and call me cynical, but I’m still not convinced words like affect or optimism fit to describe bumble bee behavior.

It felt sleepy on campus, and then I learned/remembered that it is fall break. Seems on brand for 5th year where semesters are almost meaningless with little anchoring me to time 🥲

In April, I thought it would be fun to celebrate internship apps with an 80k race in the PNW. I’m now looking at the cut-off times and my recent performances. I’m not saying I regret my decisions, but I am questioning them 🤡 2 weeks until a nice day along the Rogue River for however long!

Ok I know I’ve said this for years, but for real this time: I’m at the point of my training where I think “yay, I’m almost done, and oh no, I’m running out of time.” Maybe internship apps and dissertation writing make it hit a bit differently now. A mix of excitement, anxiety, & anticipatory grief!

Grad school doesn’t have to be that hard all of the time! Over the past week, I got to see views like these and friends get married! I also saw pika, seals, otters, alpacas, and orcas✨

This change limits eligibility to the pool of students with the *least* access to information about GRFP, and will favor the lucky few with access to mentorship and social capital as an undergrad

Two new preprints on multilevel HMMs! Time series data is now pervasive in psychology and new methods are needed to model the dynamics in such data. Hidden Markov Models (HHMs) are powerful models for dynamics in which a system is switching between a number of discrete states.

Half-baked idea but hear me out: Zone 2 to illustrate the bias-variance tradeoff. The rub is we can go fast and sacrifice endurance; or go slow and sacrifice speed. I see Zone 2 like elastic net, where we get the best of both worlds (endurance and effort) to maximize efficiency for longer runs.
