in general i'm hesitant towards all the takes about how most things coming out these days are worse now and nothing can hold up against the classics anymore, because comparing whatever just came out in a given month to centuries of art is always going to be an extremely unfair comparison

e.g. "ugh books are so bad now because of booktok influence/etc." i mean yeah of course when we think of books from the past we mostly think of the classics that have stood the test of time. but trashy paperbacks have been everywhere for a long, long time

i mainly see people do this with video games though. it's very easy for boredom with current trends to turn into romanticizing the past. there were always crappy games that chased trends. video essays did not start this. you're just hyper-aware of the current trends because they're current
