An important component of the BingQiu miscommunication is that they're both at fault. This isn't 100% just "Shen Qingqiu views everything as uncharitably as possible" nor is it all just "Luo Binghe is doing an awful job of behaving himself". It's bits of both that make it all fall apart.

The back and forth tug-of-war feel on the power in the relationship is also incredibly compelling to me. Shen Qingqiu never feels like he's devoid of agency -- he does retaliate and put his foot down and say mean things sometimes. They're both a mess and that's what makes it fun.
