What Disney (and to a lesser, belated extent various other IP owners) realized was that if you fulfill all the criteria for folklore EXCEPT communal transmission -- basically by destroying anyone who tries, driving it underground -- you create an audience dependent on you to validate their identity.

I have a certain amount of sympathy for fandom culture, because it's basically a manifestation of people's belief that art should belong to the community that creates and participates in it. The problem is that they don't; fandom is the stillbirth of folklore under capitalism.

Not only that, but the Frenchman in question -- Charles Perrault -- was INTENTIONALLY transforming old works into new ones in order to win, basically, a pre-internet flame war about whether ancient or modern literature was better. They were written for an audience of highly educated aristocrats.

A brand and a folk tale aren't exactly the same thing, but I am forced to reluctantly propose that they are much more closely related to each other than either is to high culture.

This is why people talk about their favorite fictional characters as if they're talking about their friends. It's why the worst thing a nerd can imagine a story doing is making a factual statement that contradicts a previous one, or even just that contradicts their preconceived notions of real life.

In film, you have the slow decline of mid-budget cinema. There are many reasons for this, but one is there used to be room for films that didn't have universal appeal, but made up for it because enough of the movie-going public was sophisticated enough to respond positively to craft. Now they don't.

Our media culture shifts to accommodate this. SFF becomes more insular than ever -- Tolkien wrote fantasy grounded in knowledge of history and language, then you have imitators whose only real influence is Tolkien, second-order imitators doing a bad Tolkien impression via Dungeons and Dragons, etc.

So you have a population that is functionally illiterate, a publishing industry discovering that craft is somewhere between irrelevant and harmful to sales, reactionaries realizing they can censor anything by screaming loud enough, and the greatest artists of the last generation dying in their 30s.

But talking about form and technique is HARD. It requires education (formal or self-taught), time, deep engagement. It is necessarily exclusionary, not for arbitrary social reasons, but simply because there are preconditions to being able to do it.

I think a lot of the terror of the modern age can be understood by the fact that the Internet accelerated the development of the worst type of person, the "Anti-Intellectual Nerd."
