Piracy is common and unavoidable, but it was still disheartening to see 2800+ downloads of my writing, in various languages, on a big piracy site

Crashing for hours from fever and worrying how I'll afford the next doctor visit, then waking to find the internet aflutter about rampant book piracy. This is not my favorite night. I'm going back to bed.

Failed at everything else first 🤣

Put down 2k words today. That is a lot *for me* (normally 800 a day is more my thing, due to also copiously editing and rewriting and researching as I go). Determined to finish this book by end of Jan if it burns out my eyeballs. This time last year I was writing/editing Ghostbook 😳

I’m really surprised by the writehive submission that has currently captured me the most. It’s very very far from the style of novel I usually read, but it’s just so fun and I’m having such a *good time* reading it Of course all that could change as I read more of the subs, but even so!

Writehive Mentee submissions are landing and, in a possibly ill-advised attempt to keep up with them as they arrive, I've started my early sifting process. Anything that comes in tagged as a) adult, b) speculative or SFF (in any form), and c) aiming for trad, gets silo'd to a big old spreadsheet.

Found two indie novels featuring phages as a core plot point, but the ebook editions are only on KU, which I don’t have, and the pbs are £28(!) and £62(!!). One of these books was written by an actual scientist and I’d love to read it, but that’s simply an absurd price for a paperback.

There are a lot of horror stories about cover art in the trad space, so I just wanted to rock up and say out of the blue that the cover art Tor is commissioning for GWATF is so good that I changed details in my book to match it better. Because it’s just that pretty and just that cool.

We did a gender Conceal party for my son (then my unborn child of indeterminate gender). Got together, played games, ate cake (the reveal was a rainbow!) and admired my baby bump. And talked about how gender norms are bullshit and establishing them so firmly when a kid is in utero is Problematic.

Had a looooong chat with @sunyidean.com about what is and isn’t Gothic but something just occurred to me. Is gothic always necessarily horror? Defacto I think ‘gothic horror’ but would love to be shown otherwise 💬💙

Sent out very early electronic editions of the next book (which has no cover or announcement yet, not out till may 2026) to a slew of trusted reviewers and friends, and it was just quietly gratifying to at least be thinking about the next launch. A hint of movement after endless stalling.
