Not to contribute to the problem, but I've noticed a tendency for people to forget that a name is just a name. It doesn't matter if it's called Brontosaurus or Apatosaurus, Suchomimus or Cristatusaurus, Tyrannosaurus or Manospondylus. The reality of the animal is unchanged by the label we give it.

There are many things to raise public furor over in the paleontology sphere. Science funding cuts, sexual harassment, blood amber, AI slop, Colossal, field safety, illegal fossil exports, lack of student protection. The name of a spinosaur is not a high priority in comparison

It is frustrating to see people who act like 10-year-old kids about dinosaur taxonomy but are actually 2 or 3 times older.

'Stalk-eyed flies' are the masters of cheating off someone else's test. Lots of bugs have weird, long antler-like projections, but flies in family 'Diopsidae' take the bold choice of putting their eyes on the ends of those projections. Let's talk about what evolution is up to here. (📷: kietbull)

www.abcn.kr/news/article... 사실 지난 제3회 공룡덕후박람회 행사에서 지도교수님과 제가 공동1저자로 쓴 논문을 보고 "왜 새로 붙인 학명들이 하나같이 별로냐"라는 말을 면전에서 들은 적이 있었다. 유쾌한 경험은 아니었다. 하지만 종소명에는 모식표본을 찾아서 기증해준 발견자에 대한 예우, 그리고 화석이 나온 지명과 저희 지도교수님의 아드님 성함이 겹치는 우연의 일치라는 의미가 있다. 화석을 기증해 준 사람, 화석이 나온 지역, 그리고 교수님의 아드님 이 세 이름은 앞으로도 영원히 논문에 영원히 남을 것이다.
