It is very late summer in North America during the Jurassic period, and ginkgo leaves have begun fallen upon this group of Stegosaurs, one of which carries on its thagomizers an important reminder that life in this era was cheap, and natural selection acts at incredible speeds.

Tomorrow is the 1st anniversary of the Infernodrakon. My life reconstruction was featured in the paper. I remember how excited I was, because I was playing MHWilds on the release date.

A group of Dorygnathus use a Seirocrinus raft as a hunting ground for fish, when a big Eurhinosaurus suddenly breaches the surface. This scene takes place in Germany during the Early Jurassic, around 180 million years ago. Digital painting by Peter Nickolaus, 2025.

Same thing happened to the plants that produced menthol, probably also a deterrent to keep mammals from eating them, as menthol binds to our TRPM8 receptor that primarily senses cold (lack of heat). That's why we like cooling mint flavors so much!

It's one of my favorite topics to teach in sensory physiology-- how plants likely evolved capsaicin as a deterrent to keep us from eating them and that didn't work out so great for them (or did, since we now lovingly grow and cultivate them):

EVERY CURRENT ART OF THIS ANIMAL IS WRONG!!!!!!! for this to have the normal tail its usually depicted with, it would need a string of like 150 caudal vertebrae, instead of the expected 30-40 it had big manual claws and a big bone support for a MEAN angry brow over the eye
