We really need to evaluate how we... Evaluate... Academic success. If we hold Science to high standard, while it struggles to hold high standards itself.

This would improve my family’s situation by an absurdly huge degree. I cannot begin to stress just how much my partner’s $2000 cap limits her opportunities and our financial security.

People talking about the specimen but not the gravity of such situation. Showing that affluent men are untouchable in sciences, while women can be reduced to objects without consequences. This cannot be normalised and form basis of our scientific community, or society.

I was grocery shopping last night and had to stop midway down the aisle to take in the sheer absurdity of this. You can buy a pack of juice bottles featuring three entirely distinct dromeosaurid species. Say what you will about Jurassic World, but that is mind blowing. My child self would lose it.

Very good representation of how that "crinoid mouth" that's really an angled (rounded?) slice through a set of crinoid stalk segments works. The "slice" is an erosion related thing that's probably pretty recent (caused by the formation of the little rock clast the crinoid is preserved in).

This is still RCI’s masterpiece. Look how they captured the weight and power of an animal totally unlike anything any of us have seen alive, in a mixed-media sculpture made of steel and old rocks. #FossilFriday

Science journalism is not prepared for this. Not only because of how involved Epstein was with Edge, SEED, SciAm reaching out to him, but now we have a fraction of publications left all angling for “big” stories but with no knowledge base for what’s important. The focus is subscribers and traffic.

Regarding discussion of bad actors in palaeontology: when met with confusion/ignorance about what someone did or why association with them is bad, please be willing to explain. I’ve seen people act as if not knowing is a moral failing and that isn’t fair. If you haven’t been told, you wouldn’t know.

If the paleo community is going to be serious about Horner’s connection to Epstein, we also have to be serious about Myhrvold’s, because guess who contributed photos of animals mating to Epstein’s birthday book and has been appearing in new paleo papers this year - including the new Spinosaurus.

I didn't even notice on my first look. Ugh.

I said "I love you" to another flightless bird yesterday. This one was a takahē on the predator-free island of Tiritiri Matangi near Auckland. After finding this bird on the far end of the island, I lay down in the tall grass and waited. After a while he approached closely and lingered.

I think the wowness is lost on people because the general public doesn’t understand what the word “dinosaur” means. The word still conjures big, scaly, dangerous, and dead. Birds are dinosaurs, yes, but dinosaurs are dead so it doesn’t compute. I’ve yet to find a good solution to this hurdle!
