I've been spending a lot more time in Blender recently! Here's a Torosaurus - all movements somewhat exaggerated as I just wanted to play around with the rig and the damped motion of the tail

2025 was an absurdly challenging and painful year for me, as it seems it has been for very many people - but I am so proud of my achievements and I want to take a moment for them. (1/8)

Before the European Enlightenment, cultures across the world engaged scientifically with the natural history, and showcased it visually with their own unique visual language and perception of the living world. I do not understand the current aversion to different "styles" in scientific visual art.

While the paper hasn't come out just yet, the news certainly has. Proud to announce our discovery of color patterning in a sauropod dinosaur. Will go in depth tomorrow.

The Kem Kem is home to a few basal snakes (with little baby legs!), mostly known from vertebrae. Most are quite small, but I've chosen two of the potentially larger ones - the terrestrial Norisophis, and the aquatic Simoliophis. Size comparison below ⬇️ #sciart #paleoart

Joining the ranks of the Kem Kem lobe-finned fish is the giant 3m-long lungfish, Neoceratodus! This genus is still represented today by a single species, the Queensland lungfish, which gets to a substantial 1.5m long. Size comparison below ⬇️ #sciart #paleoart

Another interesting fish from the Kem Kem - Bawitius! This is a 3m-long bichir, a group of fish I wasn't familiar with until starting this piece. Today, members of this group don't get more than a meter in length, and are apparently popular in aquariums! Size comparison below ⬇️ #sciart #paleoart

And with the addition of the (super fragmentary, big surprise) Nicorhynchus, we are done with the Kem Kem pterosaurs! While there are potentially more genera here, they are so scrappy and taxonomically messy, that I'm happy with my final selection. Size comparison below ⬇️ #sciart #paleoart

A quick update - I've decided to not do full illustrations for most of the animals below 1m in length as the quality generally doesn't hold up in the size chart. I still want to represent them in the final lineup somehow though... so keep an eye out!

For how famous the original Walking with Dinosaurs made it, Ornithocheirus is a very messy genus, with over 40 species assigned to it historically. Nowadays, only one species of Ornithocheirus remains, known from the UK and the Kem Kem (maybe!). Size comparison below ⬇️ #sciart #paleoart
