I'm unreasonably fond of "box o' rocks" heat storage. Get a bunch of bricks/gravel/whatever, wrap 'em in resistive heating elements, heat 'em up when it's sunny or windy, use the heat when it's not. Stupid-simple and robust. I've seen 50-year-old "box o' rocks" apartment heaters still going strong.
