I recently took the ELVTR Book Editing course with Tom Hoeler (Editorial Director at Random House Worlds) and I may have learned more about editing in those 8 weeks than I have in the last several years combined. It's already improved my work so much. I love learning. It's cool.

I have not cut the lawn in my backyard all summer. There are baby bunnies back there. And fireflies at night. And my cats sit and watch them in the dark. We all do.

You can be shit at drawing and still make great comics, it really doesn't matter. You CANNOT be shit at storytelling. Even if you're an amazing artist, your comics will still suck.

Just had to spent too much time deleting all the auto-generated AI alt tags from my InDesign docs. You can turn it off in Preferences, but it doesn't remove the AI tags already added before you turned it off. They were also all EXTREMELY incorrect. Fucking useless technology.

So the only stuff we're seeing is stuff companies have paid for, like this Animation Fund stuff. That's not how anti-gatekeeping art works.

Like, where's its - say - Dinosaur comics or XKCD or whatever? Folks recognising the limitations they're working in, and finding something useful? So may people have used this shit, so there should be something, but zilch.

The animation chat has me thinking one telling thing - in the years since AI arrived, there's not been a ground-up indie phenomenon, like we saw with earlier tech (Flash, etc). It hasn't unlocked anyone's creativity. For all the anti-gatekeeping rhetroic, nothing anyone cares about has been born.

I just...miss Xena.

I can't stop thinking about this video I saw where a guy went to a Japanese idol gig and there was choreographed moshing, waves of men jumping onto other men's shoulders and rushing the stage, a man bleeding from his head. The group was iLife! I am fascinated.

Very happy to see Superfish by Peglo and Keeping Time by Kody Okamoto nominated for Best Webcomic at this year's Eisner Awards. I read a ridiculous amount of webcomics and these two are among my favourites.

Doing what I'm doing now is barely sustainable. I think every day about what I should do next. But it's hard to give up creating art. And I don't want to give up. But I do also dream about running a Japanese head spa. It would be super chill and way more financially stable. Weirdly.

When I met Gerry Conway, who has recently passed, he gave me the first, best advice I have received about having a creative career: "It doesn't last. You have your moment, and it is beautiful. But it doesn't last. And you have to plan for that. Emotionally and financially."

Re last re-post: I once did an interview for a big publishing company and they kept asking me questions about how to publish books, and I kept holding up the books I'd published and being all, "Like this." And they kept saying, no, describe the process.

Hugos nominations are announced and THE POWER FANTASY is on the list of contenders for Best Graphic Story or Comic, which is just lovely. Thanks to everyone who nominated us, and put us in great company. It's amazing to be part of this.

I think I finally figured out a way to make an easily editable flat plan that lets me add pages (many at a time!), remove pages, move pages all with ease! And it can all be exported as a PDF. It's just using InDesign, not groundbreaking, but found a method that works for me without faffing about.

All night I kept thinking I had a really great joke about genestealers from 40K and the song Stealer by kpop group Enhypen. Every time I woke up, I was like, don't forget this. It's comedy gold! In the morning I realised it's terrible and doesn't work, but I did it anyway.

I am watching Your Lie in April for the first time and I'm on episode 12 and I'm sure nothing bad is going to happen, it's just gonna continue happily on from this point, right? Riiiiight???
