Cool profile of
@metr.org
’s work in the NYT today! Particularly like this from my colleague Ajeya: “METR is an organization that asks... what we think would be most valuable for the world to know about A.I. and its risks, and then the answers are what they are.”

1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken. Hundreds of kids are still detained. We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵

Yesterday, five-year-old Liam and his dad Adrian were released from Dilley detention center. I picked them up last night and escorted them back to Minnesota this morning. Liam is now home. With his hat and his backpack.

on the surface Elon’s purchase of Twitter has made the need for open networks (somewhat) clear to consumers, but I’m not convinced this was net more effective for the movement for open protocols

just watched a video on Obsidian that described it as "future-proof," i.e. it uses open file formats so you can easily migrate to a different note-taking app & you're not locked in. could borrow that to explain bluesky decentralized → open → billionaire-proof → future-proof

personal update: today is my last day with the Bluesky team! this is bittersweet news to share, but the great thing about an open network is you never really have to leave. I’ll be rooting for Bluesky and atproto from the outside 🫡💙

Bored Cow animal-free dairy milk review: it has the creaminess of whole milk but not the sweetness. the flavor is milder but the difference is less obvious in coffee. it's not a true replacement for whole milk yet but i'm glad someone is working on it

kevin roose literally spends 75% of the article defensively preempting the obvious criticism (see comments on original post) and yet people are still mad at him (the author, not the featured ai researcher). not beating the "didn't read the article" allegations

i still think domain verification is a great solution but as someone who often explains DNS to large bureaucratic institutions these days, trust me when i say that quick and easily recognizable account verification is necessary too. especially for verifying authenticity in moments of breaking news

In 25 years of covering national security, I’ve never seen a story like this: Senior Trump officials discussed planning for the U.S. attack on Yemen in a Signal group--and inadvertently added the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic.
