End of an era. CKWX— News 1130 as I’ll remember it — goes off air. At its peak, Western Canada’s largest radio newsroom. The place I spent bulk of my career before moving into TV. Lifelong friendships made. On our best days we punched well above our weight. A loss for local news.

One employee was driving to work when the station went off air. He heard the recorded message saying it was over. That’s how he was informed he lost his job. Some found out when other media began reporting it. These employees deserved dignity and respect & Rogers chose not to provide that.

I hate seeing another bad local day in my industry every six months and feeling the need to write down my thoughts about it. I am so lucky that a lot of people really appreciate what I do. But I am continually sad about what's happened around me.

In my childhood, monopolies were not allowed. In my lifetime, since 1986, everything has changed. In 40 years we’ve lost almost ALL independent media in Canada. In 12 years, we have seen 80% of Canadian print media bought by USA equity. AT WHAT POINT do we concede this experiment has failed?
