I'm far from the first person to say this but a fundamental and increasing issue with games media and how we talk about games with Themes is an unavoidable lack of media literacy and/or engagement with forms of art that aren't video games (or nerd media, really).

People lose their minds over the most facile video game analysis imaginable. Just shallow, school-book-report level stuff. It's infuriating, because you want to imagine the audience is sophisticated or has good taste, but it's so often undiscerning.

Alright here is a games journalism tip that was drummed into me when I was 19 and did work experience at a magazine: do not use the words 'mechanic', 'gameplay' or 'narrative'. When you reach for one, you usually have something specific in mind, so say the specific thing instead.

I really want to have conversations about what is good writing but it feels like that necessarily would say 'this is bad writing' sometimes, and it seems like we have no framework to do that unless the person who wrote it is also designated morally bad.
