I hear that many debut authors are unprepared for the unglamorous realties that come with the territory. I, however, have been creative freelancing on and off for a decade and am therefore untouchable. I have put on this clown hat many times before and danced silly dances you cannot even imagine.

Also, if you borrow an author's book from a library in the UK, that author gets more than 12 pence per loan in Public Lending Rights. Any author can earn up to £6,600 per year this way. For context: I published my 15th book last year. The advance I received for it was considerably less than £6,600.

The only way I've been able to focus on writing lately is with the TV on (on the right show, at the right volume, what is the right show and volume you ask? takes about 30 mins of trial and error to divine) plus electronic music on over the top (also of the right type and volume). Unmedicated who?
