I think Silksong may have permanently broken my brain when it comes to how I want action games to be designed. It's one of those instances, like RE4, where you just feel like nothing will ever be the same. Despite how amazing it is, the fact that everything will live in its shadow is depressing.

I'm still figuring out Silent Hill F's combat system. It's kind of all over the place and breaks a lot of rules, but it has a certain charm to it. The way all of the little pieces fit together is nice, even if it feels a bit unfocused at times. It's... interesting. The first boss is a blast, though.

I think survival horror indie games would get a lot better if the fans of survival horror realized that the OG Resident Evil games were just a specific flavour of realtime dungeon crawler and not some super unique idea that stands out and is impossible to recreate the fundamentals of.

You can skip a good deal of the combat in Silent Hill F, which begs the question... why engage with it al all? A classic survival horror conundrum that essentially boils down to expending resources in exchange for safety / respite.

My early impressions of Silent Hill F are very positive. The atmosphere, art design, cutscene direction, and script are all incredibly good. Yamaoka turns in some of his best work ever, and I'm excited to see where things go. The combat has potential, and I like how all the systems coalesce.

The issue with trying to talk to most people about video games is that often they're more concerned with what the game will allow them to do as opposed to what the game can do to them. Discussion of enemy behavioral design or encounter design is lost on the crowd hyperfixated on "builds" and "loot."

The crazy thing about Silksong is that, like lots of Souls games, it gives you all the tools you need for success. There's no reason to suffer. Stop "getting good" and start using your head. Also, look things up.

This is why people suck at fighting games, too. They don't understand the path to success is abusing the easiest to deploy strategy. Find that one good button or block string and use it until it doesn't work anymore. Work smarter, not harder.

If you're avoiding Silk Song because it's a Metroidvania, I implore you to reconsider. It's easily one of the best 2D action games of all time; up there with Mega Man X and Rondo of Blood. It should be the gold standard for design tenants going forward.
