I am all for sports animes having more casual rivalries that feel a bit more... plausible in real life, especially for people that spend so much time around each other. But I think the lack of rivalry here between Sky and Spe is so fun because it's so bare minimum it goes into the negatives

Season 1 of umamusume is honestly not *as* bad as I expected from how people talk about it, but also you can feel like the anime simultaneously isn't sure of what it even wants to be + it being crushed by the weight of telling both Team Spice's story and the Golden Generation's story lol

The big flaws with Uma Musume's first season kind of lie in having too many things to juggle that could've been avoided if the franchise were more willing to play with history and blur the lines and get a bit fictional as well, choosing a format more suited for introducing so many characters at once
