If I stripped Ought to Be Thy Adam down, it would be these two questions. There're a lot of bad faith answers to these questions from Viktor, the world, and even characters I believe are otherwise good people. It takes "the monster" a 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 time to find a less restrictive answer for this reason.

Our dog keeps grumbling at me and me only /all night/. He MUST have my attention. He MUST herd me to the fridge to give him more cheese. He MUST force me to throw his toy for the 10000th time. This is a hate crime.

I think the biggest lie is obviously Viktor's about his own queerness and how much he can cure it... but while Henry's lie is smaller, it's the real catalyst. He lies to himself that he's not in love with Viktor, too.

Sometimes I grieve the Eastern European trans m/m dark fantasy story that came before Ought to Be Thy Adam that covered 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 similar themes. It was me circling around what became OTBTA, but it sucks that it'll be a long while until I can return to it to avoid re-treading. (Art by ukstls!)
