This depends. The first character I ever imagined was Dictionary Jones. No relation to Encyclopedia Brown 😅... who had the skill to solve crime by turning into King Kong. By sheer coincidence, my mother was reading us Encyclopedia Brown for bedtime stories and I'd just watched the OG King Kong...

I look up or make up plants, building materials, fashion, &c. for setting. Then add a layer of grime so it feels lived in. Character design I match to lifestyle. E.g. body type. I write d/t hormonal upheaval. Started in middle school (puberty) and picked it up again after my first pregnancy. I struggle with constant chatter in my head driving me insane (at 14 I ran away from home for a day); writing does not stop the chatter, but gives it focus/direction. #SummerOfStories

Is it gauche if i jump in on day 2? #Summerofstories I prefer the first page to be in the same voice as all the other pages. Nothing too ironic, chaotic, or over-stylized. Breaking my own rule, Dogwood 1 prologue has kind of a fairytale vibe, but chapter 1 rolls right into Kenzie doin' some stuff.
