Absolutely! I think half of the traits my characters have arise surprisingly in the writing process. My favorite example is Wynne whose entire character surprised me. She was literally “they can’t all be only children so add a sibling” + “how can I make some of this internal monologue external?”

In my shipwrecked familiars novella, it's pretty basic - the monsters on the island want to eat people and/or sacrifice them to their leader. In the 1st arc of Felcrown, the monsters are people who are conspiring to destabilize the city and cause mass deaths to bring about cutthroat anarchy.

Toss up between: - The 1970 edition of the World Book Encyclopedia that we owned. It was amazing to browse through. I especially loved the annual arrival of the Yearbook additions. - National Geographic Picture Atlas of Our Universe 👀

It's a running gag rather than inside joke, but the warlocks the shipwrecked familiars serve have a whole story of their own running in the background that is parallel to the familiars' story. The MCs check in occasionally and find the warlocks in a very different situation each time. #Novmemeber

Actually managed some work on #Felcrown earlier this week: Motayu blinked the afterimage from his eyes. The massive sphinx was gone and the library was silent and empty again. Empty save for himself and [familiar] who calmly licked her paw and wiped it over her face as if nothing had happened.

Amusingly, I almost never swear myself. I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've cussed in the past decade with fingers left over. My characters, however, once I opened the gates for them... wow! I've had to reel them back in a couple times (especially in my romances)! 🤣
