My grandmother passed away 30 years before I was born. She was a singer who used to make homemade recordings on 78s of herself and her family members. My father recently found them, cleaned them, and bought a record player. This weekend I heard her voice for the first time.

TRAIN DREAMS: A bit like "What if the montages in ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES were the whole movie?," so naturally I loved it. A meditation on the beauty of life, common and uncommon. Very glad I saw it on a big screen.

With my Disney+ subscription about to lapse, I finally got around to watching JOHN CARTER, a film I've long been curious about. And like I expected, it is *interesting* and bad. It's funny to see the Wikipedia page blame its commercial failure on marketing, and sure, but also it's just bad.

When I first saw THE MASTER, Harvey Weinstein (shithead) introduced it by connecting it to veterans issues. After the screening, that felt limiting because it's about so much more than that. It's a film that contains multitudes & doesn't fit neatly into any boxes (one reason it's on my Top 10).
