The plan — grow the economy through (mostly) previously announced resource infrastructure projects, trade deals, cut government spending and and taxes, while increasing defence spending — are all things that any right-leaning government would approve of any time in the past 40 years.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has about 4,500 employees. "Employees were called into an all-staff town hall yesterday, where they learned that 1371 jobs would be affected by employment transition measures, and 587 would be cut altogether as part of the Carney government’s austerity measures."

This is too often a discussion about political parties, budgets and, at a deeper level, ideology, and we leave out the tens of thousands of public servants currently worried for their futures. It's not okay to feel empathy for private sector workers losing jobs and not for public sector workers too.

I think the reason Americans are so shocked that Canadians are saying mean things about them and not hyphenating their comments to exclude the "good ones" is because they almost exclusively invaded non-English countries previously and now they can read what is said about their empire un-mediated.

The irony of everyone fawning over how Mark Carney is 'standing up' for Canada is that he is simultaneously eroding the few institutions that actually distinguish the Canadian state from the US, and those which theoretically could be used to shield Canadians from the disaster area to the south.

National media should really be covering the fact thay every major school, museum, and arts institution in the Twin Cities, and hundreds of local businesses are closed tomorrow to protest federal occupation. Nothing like this at this scale has happened anywhere in America anytime in living memory.
