Yes drivers are exempt from the free market. Driving is so insanely subsidized that if drivers had to pay market rate for the space or speed or pollution or literally any single aspect of driving, only the rich would be able to afford it.

Why is it that price signals, the manifestation of the free market, are some innately wise force when it comes to housing or groceries — but when gas prices rise, we should do everything we can to blunt it? Are drivers exempt from the free market? Are there no alternatives to driving SUVs?

"Social murder" is a good way to put it. If this many people were being killed by cars we wouldn't be blaming people for leaving their houses in the morning. We'd demand change. Stigma is killing people. Stigma says because people use drugs the deserve to die. That is so wrong on so many levels.

Gas tax breaks are bandaids at best. Real solution is to help low & middle-income Cdns get off fossil fuels. Invest in solar, heat pumps, batteries, EVs. Tackle barriers, offer real incentives & fund w/ windfall tax on Big Oil (who are laughing all the way to the bank). Cleaner, cheaper, healthier.

Cutting the gas tax is just a subsidy to corporate profiteering unless we impose an excess profit tax.

This is great to see. As a now older, retired punk, we used to play shows around the island in town halls and school gyms. Spaces like the Globe Live really matter. They give youth a proper place to gather, create, and play, and they give parents something solid to support.

This place can’t catch a break. Rail service stopped in 2011 and it’s been in limbo ever since, tied up in ownership, funding, and planning gaps. I wish something would finally happen before it’s gone for good. It’d be a shame to lose it.
