When trustees make consequential decisions under the assumption that universities are businesses or students are customers — in both cases, they aren’t — the results often harm the universities and the students.

Key point here aside from the obvious 1A and academic freedom concerns is that TX bill SB 18 made it possible to target and fire tenured profs. This person was a tenured prof. Tenure is effectively dead in Texas.

If the goal of boards and senior administration is to have leverage over their workers, to get more work out of them for less money, then it's not a big leap to see that failing to protect faculty serves a lot of these interests. We need to protect each other, institutions will not do it for us.

When Campus Reform and Turning point came after professors and created the professor watchlist, administrators didn't pay attention..Now they are being fired and attacked. Maybe institutions should have done more to protect academic freedom....

If *your department head and your dean* can be removed for supporting your colleague in teaching in their area of expertise, then you have no academic freedom. In a functional sense, you don't work at a university at all.

A great read on UChicago, arguing we’re seeing the result of decades of mismanagement: “The university’s trustees and leaders view it preeminently as a tax-free technology incubator, and its debt load is so great that it is abandoning ideals it once held dear in order to sustain that goal.”

American universities pretend to be centers of learning, wisdom and freedom, but the reality is that the University of Chicago has a $10.4 billion endowment today. In 2013, it had the highest-paid university president in America. He made $3.4 million a year. These are lucrative businesses first.
