I've been birding for a while now and I still get unreasonably excited about a bird I've seen a hundred times. The common ones don't get any less good. There's probably a thought-leader-y data viz lesson in there somewhere but I'm not going to make it into a metaphor right now.

BEINGS is out today! Writing can be a lonely project (and this book is about loneliness in many ways) but it is absolutely impossible, at least for me, without having a community of people who have your back (and this book is also, in many ways, about having, needing, or finding community).

The hardest part of data journalism isn't writing code, it's everything else that takes a lot of experience & practice to do right — understanding your data's limitations, knowing what or who it leaves out, figuring out how it relates to other information. A bot will never be good at that.

When you do a survey that gives people that opportunity to think they're making a clever joke, they're going to make the clever joke. And then you look ridiculous when you report the results as though they are real.

This is also the first time I've made an Instagram-specific version of one of my #dataviz projects. There wasn't going to be a good way to get a vertical timeline with 100+ items to fit, so the only option was to rotate it and go horizontal. We went with a curved line to better fill the space.

There’s a lot here, but it is far from comprehensive. We narrowed down more than 3,000 stories to just over 100. It’s a testament to just how overwhelming the last couple of months have been. So if you’re feeling like you can’t keep up - you’re not alone.

I don’t understand how we so quickly forgot the supply shock lessons of Covid. Do people not remember what it was like to just not be able to get ahold of stuff required for daily existence? I am telling you, manufacturers that can’t absorb these tariffs are going to simply stop assembly lines.

The discourse around tariffs has been “things will get more expensive” but I am here to tell you that I am knee deep in reporting on this subject and I strongly suspect that if super high tariffs endure, it will shift to *certain items cease to be available at any price*
