Contract signed! My book - "Purges: How Dictators Fight to Survive" - will be out with Cornell UP, likely in early 2026. The list of people I have to thank is long, and I'll do so in future, but for now it's just gratifying to know that the end of the road is in sight.

Immediate reactions to violent protests of Jan. 19 in Seoul: first, it was an incredibly dangerous situation. I haven’t yet seen reports of confirmed injuries, but allegations of police officers and protesters being pushed and beaten. So I hope everyone is OK. 1/

This is ridiculous. As many others are asking, if North Korea took military action right now, who would be in charge of South Korea’s response?

Great insights by Ben (as usual). One alternative perspective is that the very presence of troops at the Assembly, and lawmakers having to climb walls to get in, is troubling. The military could have obstructed lawmakers far more, but they were also not passive bystanders or resisters to Yoon.

Impeachment in 🇰🇷 requires: - one-third of members to support proposal - two-thirds to approve - constitutional court ruling within 180 days FWIW the opposition currently has 192/300 seats. DPP alone has 170.
