My most genuine beef with this book is that we live at a time where the human complexities of learning, neuroscience, school, and society have never been better understood AND in urgent need of understanding, but the author of Just Tell Them says "nuh uh" to all of that: "Pay attention to *me*."

This may not surprise you, Theora, but the author of this book does not mention disability, ability, or any variety of neurodivergence even a single time. Despite the fact that 1/5 American students has a documented disability and 1/5 American children are neurodivergent. For him they do not exist.

I have long said people need trellises, not cages, to thrive. Cages can be physical but more often are done by governance and system design that attempts to standardize what is not inherently standard. People lose the ability to understand their intrinsic motivations - which is intentional.

For many kids, resistance, rebellion, power struggles, are their ONLY outlet to assert their human need for agency, autonomy, & control of their lives. WE set them up for that!

The point is that we don't have to guess or invoke a "science of learning" to hypothesize how kids experience structures, systems, and practices at school. Schools are literally full of kids, just ask them. But most importantly: listen, empathize, and act.

Is it notable that across 3797 highlights in our most recent collection, students mentioned some variation of "friggin packet, yo" 37 times? "Basically stop giving us friggin' packets." "They just hand me a freakin' packet. I don't really learn like that, yo." www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5b6...

And while the number of total responses implying "amotivation" (the lack of ANY motivation, drive, or intention) were relatively low (~8% of responses re: motivation), the severity combined with other mental health indicators is very troubling.

Extrinsic motivators predominated when we asked students about motivation & categorized their responses, and of those Grades & Deadlines (32%) & College/Career Goals (24%) together made up 56% of extrinsic motivators. Of intrinsic motivators, Interest/Passion/Curiosity outnumbered Choice 2:1!

I think it would literally kill me (in fact, the sitting epidemic DOES kill people) if I had to sit all day AND sit in the same spot to work. Absolutely wild that we expect that the best possible learning condition for children looks like this:

For all the talk of "running government like a business," half of all small businesses fail in the first 5 years. 18,926 business bankruptcies were filed in 2023! The US government is typically the bulwark of stability against volatile market forces, until we put "businessmen" in charge, anyway. 🙄

As a teacher I had such mixed experience with administrators that I took for granted the courageous ones who cultivate thriving visions of school, student experience, & teacher practice. Their work happens behind the scenes & the credit often goes elsewhere. Shout-out to you all! 🙌
