Not to put too fine a point on it, the power of MPs to hold party leaders (government and opposition) to account is one of the key differences between parliamentary and presidential systems, that insulate the former from democratic breakdown.

The independence of MPs to use their judgement is a crucial component of representative democracy. If anything, we should encourage more. We wouldn't call a non-confidence vote a miscarriage of democracy, because those MPs are there precisely to bring accountability to govt between elections.

NDP and Conservatives mad at floor crossers are not really focusing on the bigger question that should be consuming them: why are the Liberals able to steal their lunches? People are crossing the floor at least in part because their own parties are not meeting the moment—and polling reflects this.
