I was at a gathering recently and was asked what I thought about the efficiency of translating vs working with/checking MTL, and I asked them if they would rather do homework they know how to do or go over someone else's homework, and they got it right away.

I've had translators refuse to do check/cleanup passes on sufficiently bad *human* translations in favor of starting over from scratch, even bsky.app/profile/jent...

Every professional translator I know has the same position on this and can easily explain the reasons for it when asked. The fact that executives don't even bother to ask and force translators to work on AI/MTL slop regardless makes it clear where their priorities lie: money trumps quality.

The whole SGGG translation debacle just brings up yet again, why in God's name are we using AI to automate the fun, creative things in life? Translating a beloved game is a joy, an honour, a learning experience, a hugely rewarding personal challenge. Let robots do the dishes, this is the good stuff!

Can confirm, takes about this long and the best-paid translators only make about $1,000 per volume. Editors make less per volume; I’m not sure about Letterers. It’s not that expensive to get a good localization of a manga volume. Don’t let them forget that.

The actual translation part of translating a volume of manga generally takes about a week or so and costs about a grand and change. Just some numbers it might be helpful to remember

asking any kind of "why" question about its "thinking" is pointless because it doesn't think in the first place. it just takes the text that exists so far and generates the most likely followup to it based on its training data

if you ask "why the hell did you make that up" what you are actually doing is taking the conversation you've had so far and pasting it into a new prompt to a new process, whose task then becomes "come up with a statistically likely excuse"
