I never got to play it but StarTropics is extremely special regarding its manual. The game comes with a letter and there's a hidden message with a code in it required to progress the game that is only revealed when you dip the letter in water. The VC port on the Wii also had a cute animation for it!

One of the main reasons Tokimeki Memorial can feel obtuse to people playing it now in 2026 when it didn't to Japanese players in 1994 is you're not playing with the manual and info cards, which explicitly spell out the game's entire calendar and all major events so you can plan runs in advance.

I find it extremely funny that after literally decades of people clowning on Zero Wing as 'unintentional comedy' (due to a wonky translation), it turns out the game was just packed to bursting with weird, fully intentional gags.
