Before you rock in with a bunch of suggestions of what the label should have been (don't), one thing I'll point out is the work isn't done in a vacuum and is observed by the wildlife. One of many problems with these is avoiding the creation of labels they will in turn use themselves.

The practice of spinning up a new, niche label reduces the ability to explain these concepts to laypeople and, as we've seen, can be weaponized in bad faith by certain motivated actors.

I don't blame the people behind the term for this issue because the people who create these terms have only so much control, but this is an example of where one has to be very controlled and aware of where these terms will go and how they'll be used.

While other practitioners have other reasons for using the label, the FBI is relying on NVE as a catchall category that allows them to avoid confronting the role of white supremacy in political violence.
