May the history of the Daily News, when it is written, reflect that upon unanimous ratification of the first contract in more than three decades, the next words uttered in the Zoom call were those of street reporter Kerry Burke: “Okay, I got a homicide. I gotta go.”

After three years of organizing, @nydnunion.bsky.social has won a contract! The Council is proud to stand with them, passing the “Too Tough to Die” resolution led by @cndelarosa.bsky.social in support of their fight. New York is a union town!

This is the first CBA the for the paper's newsroom in 34 years. This is by all measures a historic accomplishment. When we formed this union five years ago, we aimed to safeguard against the wrath of Alden, a hedge fund notorious for scrapping newspapers for parts.

We've reached the end of a three-year battle... and come out the other side with health care for part timers, raises, and much more. This would never have happened without the dedicated support of so many people at the Daily News, former Daily Newers, and many others. 🖖🏻

The NY Daily News is finally looking (internally) to fill the vacant night “Shack” job (crime and breaking news, often rewrite too). It’s a job I held for years before covering courts. OFC, because Alden won’t pay a living wage, the pay is $10K+ less than back in ‘15 for the same job. Shameful.

Good News: The Daily News is finally filling an open position—but just one. Bad News: It's an internal hire for about $57k a year—$10k less than they offered for the same job 10 years ago. Once again, Alden and Heath Freeman show they're not investing in newspapers, just siphoning money away.

Please take some time to read this excellent write-up by the student-run Duke Chronicle about how Duke University is naming an athletic field after noted newspaper-killer Heath Freeman — whose Alden Global Capital hedge fund has hollowed out the NY Daily News.

Heath Freeman gave enough money to Duke University to get a lacrosse field named after him. But he can't spare enough money to give his reporters parental leave. Shame on Heath, shame on Alden, shame on Duke -- where at least the student reporters won't hesitate to call it like they see it.
