Today, the Council passed my resolution declaring the first Monday of November as Black Solidarity Day in NYC. Inspired by Dr. Carlos Russell’s 1969 call to uplift Black unity, this day will honor the Black community's ongoing fight for equity, self-determination, and collective progress.

24 years ago, American Airlines Flight 587 to Santo Domingo crashed in Belle Harbor on the Rockaway Peninsula, claiming 265 lives. Today, we honor their memory. Our hearts remain with the victims, their families, and the communities impacted by this tragedy.

Mayor Adams’ vetoes are yet another rejection of policies that would directly benefit working class New Yorkers. Instead of supporting bills to promote pay equity, protect tenants, and strengthen accountability, he’s chosen to block progress.

This is a devastating loss. Firefighter Patrick Brady embodied the courage and selflessness of @fdny.bsky.social, risking everything to keep his fellow New Yorkers safe. Our city owes him a great debt of gratitude. My heart is with his family, friends, and all who loved him.

After three years of organizing, @nydnunion.bsky.social has won a contract! The Council is proud to stand with them, passing the “Too Tough to Die” resolution led by @cndelarosa.bsky.social in support of their fight. New York is a union town!

Today, @council.nyc.gov passed a major package of bills to confront our city’s maternal health crisis, stemming from nearly a year of work from the Maternal Health Steering Committee I convened.     I’m proud to lead this effort to save lives, expand care, and make every birth in this city safe.

Jamaica is a thriving and vibrant community whose success is key to the prosperity of Southeast Queens and our entire city. This historic plan, led by CM Nantasha Williams, delivers new homes, jobs, and community investments that will guide Jamaica’s continued growth and transformation.

As Chief Chaplain, Rabbi Alvin Kass was a wise and trusted member of the NYPD, counseling officers and colleagues through times of tragedy. His dedication to our city for nearly 60 years will never be forgotten. My prayers are with his loved ones. May his memory be a blessing.

Mayor Adams’ misleading ballot proposals 2, 3, and 4 seek to cut @council.nyc.gov out of the approval process for new housing in the name of “fast-tracking” development, but our review period is *65 days max* out of 900+ days total. They don’t actually address the source of delays.

Our seniors are the jewels of our communities. As New York City’s older adult population grows, it’s critical that we invest in the spaces and services they rely on. This $5 million investment will help ensure our elders have the safe, welcoming centers they deserve.

In 2022, 66 people died from pregnancy-related causes in NYC. Black New Yorkers are six times more likely to die during pregnancy or post-partum than white New Yorkers. These injustices are why I convened a Maternal Health Steering Committee to advance solutions to end these preventable deaths.

Federal immigration enforcement must always comply with the law and respect the rights of New Yorkers. In response to Tuesday’s ICE raid on Canal Street, @newyorkstateag.bsky.social launched a new reporting tool to hold federal actions like these accountable.

Trump’s threats to deploy troops to our city makes all of us less safe. This is un-American and creates chaos that only weakens our local communities and economy. New Yorkers want a safe and affordable city, and we are united in demanding that Trump keep his hands off NYC.

Mike McKee was a tireless champion for tenants & affordable housing. His decades of advocacy w/ Tenants PAC NY & Met Council on Housing shaped stronger rent protections and transformed the lives of countless New Yorkers. My deepest condolences to his loved ones & all who carry forward his legacy.
