Day 8 #LibFaves25 Tragic doomed lovers trapped in an infinite loop destined to kill one another forever. He’s kept a journal. When she finds it, she holds his soul in her hands. So the prose is perpetually punctuated with his poetry. Not usually a romance fan, the mystery and world building worked!

Well, actually we’ve always done that stuff. We just hid behind a myth about what America is supposed to be. Now it’s all naked for us to see and we cringe at the reality that we’re living in the same country that has terrorized people for generations and sold us a phony “Mom’s apple pie” narrative.

Day 7 #LibFaves25 A sensory rich kaleidoscope that reads like a cultural palimpsest. Read this for rich details, propulsive action, vivid descriptive language, quick emotional engagement, evocative sense of place and engrossing characters. #Ibis

Day 6 #LibFaves25 Backman at his best imo a story about the enduring power of friendship, the difficulties of being human, the power of art and the surprising truth of love in all its flawed complexity.

“It’s art that helps me cope. Because art is fragile magic, just like love, and that’s humanity’s only defense against death. That we create and paint and dance and fall in love, that’s our rebellion against eternity. Everything beautiful is a shield.”

“It might sound like an unhappy ending, but only if you forget how many times during this story we’ve told you that someone laughed. How many really good nows is that? How many people ever have more?”

I think one of the things My Friends shares with my other Faves if his (My Grandmother Told Me… and Anxious People) is the heartbreaking tenderness and vulnerability. Characters who often desperately distraught themselves discover how to notice & care for that brokenness in others.

The turn to slop is something we actually have a lot of power over. We choose what art we engage with and whose art we engage with. We have the ability to choose films based on original ideas, to read books instead of just doom scroll, to talk about poetry instead of just Vanderpump.

Day 5 #LibFaves25 A surrealist, feminist call to action. With notes of the Umbrella Academy, a secret underground and a fierce protagonist working to filter her father's gaslighting to forge a path to autonomy. My high school book club had a great convo with this one.
