I would posit that (as well as a shorter work week,) this is directly related to the fact that everyone there has access to healthcare and education. Sick and worried people aren't happy and well off, and the countries that "win" in the 21st Century will be the ones with the best educated public.

As a childless 40-something, I have no cultural connection to whatever the hell an Elf on the Shelf is. Friends and family with kids talk about it. I nod, but don’t really understand. What is the point of the elf on the shelf? Does the shelf provide a better vantage point for the elf to slay orcs?

WHO AMONG US hasn't sat down 11 times with a journalist and a tape recorder only to be shocked that they'd publish stuff we talked about?

Just a reminder that Dave Yost led a national campaign in 2022 to discredit story about a 10 y/o Ohio girl who was raped and had to go to Indiana for an abortion. The head of the Ohio GOP, Alex Triantafilou, called the story about the girl "a garbage lie." Spoiler: The story was true.

Apparently the guy who wrote this letter, and who served in the Regan and Bush I administrations, never heard of Lee Atwater nor the Southern Strategy.

Now that's he's getting better, @claytoonz.bsky.social is branching off from cartooning and now doing photorealistic portraits.

honestly, if i were trying to design a place for the political opposition to take a stand against trump, i couldn't have done better than abrego garcia. by trying to destroy basic constitutional protections, it was *trump* who made this a dispute over due process and the Constitution.

One under-appreciated part of this: note the bit below about “and their dependents.” Under the Trump admin’s new policy, dependent children of visa applicants are not allowed to have their social media set to private during the entire visa process. They MUST make their social media public.

Amazing grassroots work in Missouri! @davidpepperoh.bsky.social reviews all the ways politicians in Missouri have tried since September to ram thru a new, more gerrymandered map and to thwart citizen efforts to block it. Activists gathered ~ 3x the required signatures. Still, the fight's not over.
