Belmont updated their GHG emissions inventory and it's a similar story to other cities on the Peninsula. ~50% of emissions are on-street transportation. More walking and biking help move the needle but progress is so sloooow it can just be maddening. We have the perfect weather almost year-round!

Protected Bike Lanes are coming to the City of San Mateo! Some highlight from the plan for 19th/Fashion Island. Protected intersections, slip lanes removed, car traffic mitigations (more queueing space/optimizing travel lane direction) Tough tradeoffs but overall an exciting initial design!

Having this nuanced discussion doesn't fit current public discourse in my local city. We are so stuck on "all bikes" or "all cars". Dropping one car and replacing the trips you can with an e-bike can hugely change transportation and finances for families!

This evenings adventure is getting to PayPal Park to see the Earthquakes without driving. Step one is hop on @caltrain.com The train ride is about the same length of time as driving. Unfortunately the stadium isn’t super close to the train station.

A standard San Mateo Nextdoor comment on a person getting hit in a crosswalk 😡. Clearly no other developed nation has figured this out so we should just blame the victim and move on.

Views from the Stanford bike path on the way home from camp last week. My kids exclaimed: “now we can tell people we went to Stanford!” 🤣 Overall biking on campus is awesome. Connection to Caltrain for bikes could be better though.

The LTN/modal filter approach could be so effective on the SF Peninsula/Caltrain corridor. This latest study shows cutting off the through traffic has a negligible effect on other roads too. I hope a city gives this a go soon!

Minneapolis light rail was a great ride from the airport to our hotel. Impressed how cheap it was for our family to ride. I wish I had figured out some more bike sightseeing. Anyone with ideas feel free to chime in. We’re right in downtown as we’re going to the Gold Cup game on Sunday.

Tried out the new cargo bike sized BikeLink lockers at the San Mateo @caltrain.com station. They are surprisingly roomy! Our Tern GSD fit without issue. I’m curious if the Urban Arrow would fit. Also, they are mis-priced in the app at 5c/hour so act fast to save 3c/hour!

Propaganda that homeownership is good, sedentary population is good, and protecting the sedentary’s interests over all others using tax policy is good. The consequence is low mobility, concentrated localists against change, & a gerontocracy that taxes the young to subsidize the home-rich seniors.

This used to be parking for ~20 vehicles. It was a fight to keep it open to people, families, and outdoor seating. Not even a particularly warm summer night and it’s hopping tonight. Great to see San Mateo making smart decisions for its future!
