A7. Do your best to include elements of Black History into the curriculum before (& after) February. Make it part of your routine each day to share about a pivotal contributor to our American history–Black, African, Caribbean, etc. Empower students to embrace humanity in all its hues.

A6. Teachers must know & see their students beyond the grades they get. They must know their students’ interests & struggles & affirm their dreams. This will allow teachers to create avenues of curricular alignment w/ their students’ goals. It’ll take time, but will be time well spent. #AFFIRMATIONS

A5. That’s my word-FAMILY! I cultivated a familial connection w/my students so they understood we were all responsible for each other. I invited families into our classroom, i.e. I invited fathers of my AA students to our class to share their work as financial advisors during our stock market unit.

Q4. BH encompasses so much more than just civil rights or social justice figures. There are Black chemists, mathematicians, engineers, poets, & more. Being introduced to one successful Black man or woman may shift the trajectory of a student. That possibility alone makes the extra prep worth it.

Q3. What I’d like to share instead is one way to prepare for a BH project. 1) Curate a list of AAs, at least 30 names. 2) Provide safe, pre-determined links for Ss to use to research. 3) Ask Ss to select their top 3 choices, then you pick their person of study. I'll share a list of resources below.

Q2. I used students’ lived experiences and their interests in my lesson designs as much as possible: we created norms together; they shared their experiences in various states during our U.S. unit; they were able to use manipulatives for math quizzes & tests; we also had discussions about character.

I’ve taught grades K-8. I used to send my 5th graders’ questions about Black History & enslaved people to my friend @drbrooms7.bsky.social of Morehouse. We’d connect with him virtually and he’d answer the questions live. It was a powerful way for them to learn details omitted by curriculum.
