Some children may learn about flooding and flood risks in the classroom. Others will learn about it firsthand when their homes or schools are inundated, or the roads in their neighborhood are underwater and potentially treacherous. Flood safety needs to be explicitly taught in schools.

Meet Patrick the tea plant 🌿 For our #TerraLigo #STEM enrichment project, #SustainabiliTEA, it seemed fitting to take a tea plant along to a school today. The KS3 students immediately decided to name the plant Patrick. They'll be investigating the use of biochar on soil health over the coming weeks.

I haven't fed 5000 people with five loaves of bread & two fish. However we have grown 33 squash this summer. One Crown Prince will produce 14 main meals. Tonight it was squash & chickpea tagine. Vegan, nutritious & delicious 😋 £0.50 per portion for chickpeas & spices, everything else was homegrown.

The apple harvest is disappointing. Late frosts killed the blossom & Storm Floris caused fruit drop. These are James Grieves which can't sustain supermarket handling so you can only taste how delicious they are from local suppliers or growing your own. We have another ~30 varieties to go! #pomology

When teaching about #ClimateChange teachers are instructed to be impartial. But science is science, a huge proportion of the blame can be pointed at #BigOil as the evidence is undeniable. Schools should boycott educational initiatives such as Wonderverse by Equinor & Energising Futures from BP.

Our food is grown in toxic landfill leachate & 💩 How did anyone ever come up with a scheme so wrong? Is it even legal? Our system is not fit for purpose. I don't think I even want to teach young people some aspects of how badly we've been let down. But I can teach them how we can do things better.

In 2022 DfE stated the UK will be a global leader in climate change & sustainability by 2030. There's much work to do! A great extended article to share with students demonstrating our ability to both create and solve problems. TLDR? Humans have repeatedly caused catastrophic environmental harm from whale oil, to lead in petrol, to CFCs in the ozone layer. We've reversed harm before & we can do so again.

For many teachers SLANT isn't working and behaviour in classrooms is getting worse. The most common age for verbal or physical abuse is 12-14 year olds (KS3). Fantastic example to use with students on how some media outlets sensationalise and misrepresent scientific studies to mislead readers. Teaching how to critique articles, identify disinformation and recognise greenwashing is becoming increasingly vital.
