Given the risks airport expansion poses to our climate targets (and by extension the future health of the planet), the bar for the economic benefits of airport expansion should be extremely high, but right now the case just doesn't stack up.

So, what exactly will the climate impact be from 100,000 additional flights from Gatwick airport? How many million tonnes of CO2 (and non-CO2 impacts)? Government clearly see this as unimportant. Apparently the media does too - this figure is absent from all coverage. @georgemonbiot.bsky.social

This is a brutal graph. Governments justify continued fossil fuel production with the rhetoric that "if we don't supply it, someone else will". It's drug-dealers' logic.

The juxtaposition this morning of a report showing planned fossil fuel production through to 2030 is far in excess of that needed to stop warming spiralling above 2C and the UK government approving Gatwick expansion is quite the thing.

"The government is planning to set out its belief that the expansion will be possible without breaching the UK’s carbon budget." Belief triumphing over facts here...
