The way we were treated at Delaney Hall is almost unbelievable. ICE shoved me, manhandled @repbonnie.bsky.social, and arrested Mayor Baraka. They disrespected us and tried to stop us from conducting the oversight we’re elected to do. But we’ll never back down in our fight for what is right.

There is only reason law enforcement paid with tax payer dollars think it’s legitimate to violently arrest an elected mayor of a major city. And they hide behind masks. Shame on them and this administration.

So, the takeaway is that habitual offender laws did not emerge from the tough on crime era in the late 1900s, but instead from the eugenics movement in the early 1900s. The Howard Law Journal published my research on this last month.

Yesterday, Maryland lawmakers took a step towards justice by passing the Second Look Act, legislation that allows a judicial review of sentences after serving 20 years for those who committed their offense under age 25.

I may be tired and a little hoarse, but as I said again and again on the Senate floor, this is a moment where we cannot afford to be silent, when we must speak up.
