The very fact that Guardiola cut off our left side via the press, & allowed us to play (as much as we could) down the right, tells you all you need to know, unfortunately. A triumvirate of Bradley, Konate, & Grav are not conducive to progression. They are far more likely to cough up possession 😕

Further to Greg’s thoughts, I don’t think there’s a solution outside of the transfer windows to come. The complete lack of any change in buildup patterns, with Trent no longer at the club, means we lack deep progression of the ball in the initial phase far too often. We’re too easy to stop.

Through 11 matches, the Premier League's most unplayable attacker this season is this guy, and it's not actually that close. Yes, it helps to play with Haaland, but Doku is 1.5 times more dangerous with the ball around the box than anyone else in the league this season.

Pep absolutely did Slot in that first half. Forcing the ball by pressing us to end up with Konate & Grav (our two weakest passers) absolutely killed us dead, & gave them so many opportunities for turnovers in the most dangerous area of the pitch for them, with Doku lurking.

Against "weaker" teams, we've struggled against long balls and long throws. Against a strong team today, we struggled because we lack deep lying progressive passing. The first is perhaps a surprise. The second is not.

All true. But we couldn't make adjustments to City's press or plan to pack the midfield before the game was decided.

Doku has three shots today for (as of right now) 0.12 xG. That brings his total to 8 shots in the PL this season. He looks improved as a passer, but I still think he only makes sense as part of Pep’s sicko “Haaland takes every shot” attack.
