The Douglas County district court just preliminarily enjoined parts of SB 63, the anti-trans healthcare bill for minors. The PI hearing was back in November. I'm sure the ACLU will post it soon, but this is a very important first step, both for the Loe case as well as other litigation (1/x)

Totally agree w/ this take. I somehow managed to become extremely close with two people I randomly met at a conference in my first year. We are now each others' biggest cheerleaders. To say nothing of the more senior faculty I've gotten to engage with, who have been so generous/kind/fun. Its a hoot!

I actually think there is a broader point to be made about lots of judges evaluating claims for injunctive relief against the police. They have never felt the endemic, oppressive force of policing; they find it hard to believe that systemic solutions are necessary/worth the squeeze.

As expected, the ACLU has sued over Kansas SB 244 (the drivers license/bathroom bounty hunter bill). Petition linked here; motion for TRO also filed, and hopefully the court moves quickly. assets.aclu.org/live/uploads...

A reminder that the cruelty is the point. That was on full display when the AG argued in prior litigation that the previously-passed so-called "women's bill of rights" prevented trans Kansans from having IDs that matched their gender identity.

Oh look Kansas is making headlines again. TL/DR: There’s a years long history behind that letter re: drivers licenses being revoked for trans folks. Including litigation (that the attorney general LOST). Which was why he urged the legislature to intro SB 244 and rush it thru in a gut and go.

Today one of my best friends from law school happened to be on my campus and he got to come say hi to me for a bit and he happened to meet a bunch of my current and former students and it was just the most wholesome feel good full circle moment. I can't really explain why but it felt awesome!

As someone who studies police misconduct and has investigated many police departments for misconduct that falls WAY short of what we’ve seen from CBP/ICE this year, this THIS is the “demand” for THIS moment? ….. I’m without words.

THIS. I did a lot of media in my last job, and felt the same way then too. We need to normalize saying "I don't have sufficient expertise on that." We don't need to be uninformed mouthpieces on all issues at all times - pretending to be an expert for media exposure just undermines us all.

first day of the semester tomorrow. i will never, ever, take for granted what a gift it is to be in academia, and to have a month+ to recharge b/w semesters. the last 4 years i was in practice, i had a trial or major hearing every jan/feb and winter break w/ small kids while working was THE WORST.
