Given what we’ve seen on America’s streets, it’s worth repeating what the court says here: Needlessly pointing a firearm at someone can violate the Fourth Amendment, even if the officer never pulls the trigger.

This is one reason we think there's public-interest value in demanding that settlements include things like public apologies, consent judgments, and required trainings for public officials. It adds in some personal accountability that matters, especially in these small towns.

The county was the secondary actor here, too. These raids were driven by the city's mayor and police chief. But the sheriff's office eagerly went along w/ what their buddies wanted. So now they're paying out $3M, issuing a public apology, and will have a federal court enter judgment against them.
