The sentiment that ttrpgs should be played as written, to produce the specific experience designer intended regularly pops up, so I finally want to share some of my thoughts on it, as it runs counter to how I experience ttrpgs as player and designer and to why I even enjoy them as a creative form.

but if you're going to key a location (which you don't have to do for every hex, tbc, esp with good weather & encounter tables, I'm pro-empty hexes), it should be detailed and specific enough that I can run the location out of the book with no further preparation on my part as a GM

worth distinguishing between the variables every hex has (its location, its terrain, other persistent features/effects present across whole regions) and specific keyed locations. unkeyed locations are good with nothing but the terrain type—they often don't need a specific entry past that

Between reading this book and this one, which highlighted for me how quickly homebrew was a part of the growth of TTRPGs (instantaneous) I'm becoming pretty sold on the idea that trying to make a game that "doesn't need rules adjustment at the table" is an uphill battle and the wrong fight.
