Though they don't seem to be talking about it publicly, it's worth screaming from the rooftops that university presses have also lost NEH grants. NEH has a program to fund creating OA editions of books born of NEH funded research. Publishers apply directly for those grants, not scholars.

I just got confirmation that National History Day, a program that does more to ignite K-12 students' love of history, learning, and yes, even the United States than anything else I've ever seen, had all its funding cut yesterday by the DOGE-axe at the NEH - including for this year's ongoing contest.

If you’ve ever sat on an NEH review panel (as many of us have), you know how difficult it is to win a grant. It’s an incredibly exacting process, with way too many excellent projects competing for funding. Awardees are scrutinized from every direction, with more rigor than DOGE can even imagine.
