In the book’s discussion of the “rehoming” of adopted children we find, once again, the likening of adoptees to house pets. Both domains share a vocabulary: #adoption, rescue, Gotcha Day, forever home, rehoming, etc.

this book is full of stories like this—of parents relinquishing their “orphans” to adopters because they do not know what adoption or relinquishment mean. The concept of #adoption as permanent severance is Western. Many of these families imagined it to be temporary sponsorship. it’s fucking insane.

Was just thinking about this today. Society always gushed about how wonderful it was that I came to be a part of my adoptive family. No one ever stopped to think how ugly it felt to me. I carried that burden silently, and those feelings came out in behaviors I didn't understand. #adoption 🥚

In addition, profit driven incentives in the adoption industry encourage falsification of vital records. I am among hundreds of thousands of paper orphans. I was administratively documented as an orphan solely for purposes of adoption.

Many things can be true. This policy is racist. *And* transnational adoption into the US is a dying industry that has always been rooted in white saviorism, evangelicalism, predation, lies, and the exploitation geopolitical conflict or natural disaster.

I find this common Christian analogy of adopting children to being “adopted” by God so repellent it leaves me nauseated. To complete the analogy means to see the severance of the child’s original family as a divine punishment for sin. Whose sin? 🥚

So true! Having lived in an orphanage in my developing years, I identify as an "orphan" more so than an "adoptee" because of the systemic/cultural circumstances that created the orphanage in the first place.

Those-who-raised-me benefited from an interstate network of protestant ministers who secured agreements from unwed pregnant women to make their infants available to "good, infertile christian couples*" -- I was "orphaned" before I was even born. * that the couples were white is implicit 🥚

the word “orphan” is maybe the most politically weaponized word you never think about. 🥚

I hate this word with a passion. There are very few true orphans in this world, and majority of them are raised by family. The "orphans" most Americans talk and write about actually have at least one living parent. 🥚

This is why I want to abolish #adoption! We are continuing to support a system that punishes families experiencing temporary financial hardship. That's immoral, unjust, and disgusting.

people tell me all the time how universal and global #adoption is, when in fact adoption agencies have time and again dangled promises to the families of the “orphans” they want to “save” in non-Western countries by exploiting their ignorance of the modern Western concept of plenary adoption.

Surrogacy and donor eggs/sperm also fall under this umbrella of “well yeah, it’s exploitation, but what if I need to exploit someone to own a baby someday?” 🥚
